ESSAOUIRA & THE ATLANTIC COAST

“Essaouira, beautiful and free like the wind, so generous that it becomes painfully moving. With the passion of its waves which tell stories from another time, the kindness of its merchants which invites you to smile, and the candor of the sun rising early in the early mornings. »

MEETING IN OCEANIC LANDS

Between sand dunes, steep cliffs and deserted beaches, extend the forests of argan trees, endemic species of the southern Moroccan coast.

Landscapes of contrast between the blue of the Atlantic Ocean, the greens of the vegetation and the yellow of the fine sand of its magnificent beaches.

THE FLORA OF ESSAOUIRA

There we find the argan tree which produces an almond from which we extract the fabulous argan oil used in cosmetics and cooking.

Thuja is also the treasure of the region, its wood delights the province's artisans.

There remains the tamarisk, this tree representative of the seaside, which protects the sand dunes against the strong storms of the Atlantic Ocean.

THE WILDLIFE OF ESSAOUIRA

Eleonor falcons, gulls and other seabirds nest on the coast of Essaouira. At the water's edge there are all kinds of shellfish, mussels, periwinkles, whelks, sea urchins, as well as octopus and cuttlefish which make the Souiris restaurants so successful.
Finally, coming across a cuvier's gazelle is an exception for the region's inhabitants. This small, slender, agile and fast antelope is always discreet in the argan forests. It turns out that during a first spotting, the TDG sports team had the chance to see one in the distance.
The region's small fetish animal is the Barbary squirrel which we often come across on the roads and paths, it feeds on the fruits of the argan tree.
